Map defense is an ego defense mechanism in which information that contradicts the map is experienced as a threat to the “I” and is consequently perceived selectively, distorted, or denied. Disidentification removes the basis of this mechanism by making the map an object of observation rather than part of the “I”, whereby the error loses its status as a threat and becomes a basis for updating and expanding the map.
