The conscious is the layer of psyche where aware perception and thinking occur; its function is to notice what is happening, analyze the situation, and when needed intervene in automatic reactions of the unconscious (i.e., in the regime of mind automatism). At the same time, most human behavior arises outside this layer: most reactions (up to ~99%) are launched unconsciously, while consciousness often joins after the fact — as a mechanism of correction, choice, and redefinition of an already-started action.
