Map defense is an ego defense mechanism in which information that contradicts the map is experienced as a threat to the “I” and is consequently perceived selectively, distorted, or denied. Disidentification removes the basis of this mechanism by making the map a object of observation rather than part of the “I”, whereby the error loses its status as a threat and becomes a basis for updating and expanding the map.
